Salvaged Garden Box

Salvaged Garden Box

For as long as I could remember, I have always wanted a garden; filled with flowers, vegetables, fruit, you name it. I tried my first hand at gardening a few years ago when we were living in a tiny apartment. I bought lettuce seeds, jalapeno seeds and green bean seeds and I planted them in containers. My green bean plant was the only one to grow but I only harvested two green beans. TWO. That was it. To be fair, our porch of the apartment was very shaded with no sunlight at all so I gave up.

When we bought our first house, I was excited to carve out a place to garden and when my dog Olive died we made a remembrance garden with flowers but our other dog Bella decided to dig all that up so I gave up again.

Well now with this house, Bella hasn't been digging as much and Anthony decided he wanted to build something with some of the old fencing I have been hoarding. You can guess by the title of what he decided to build me, right?

So I'm gonna share the pictures and process he took to make me this little ol' box. There are no specific measurements involved as he made use of the pieces we had so you can customize this to whatever size you want.

Once he gathered all the pieces he planned to use for our box, Anthony cut down the pieces so they can be the same length, 7 long pieces (2 sides, 5 bottom supports) and 2 short pieces for the other sides.

Once he had the pieces cut to size, he laid out all the pieces in how he planned to assemble them before nailing together.

Since he (and I) was satisfied with how everything looked, he nailed the pieces together.

It took me a few days but I finally found a place for Anthony to put my garden box and we filled half of it with soil and three plants: basil, cilantro and jalapeno.

Although Bella has already eaten the jalapeno plant and trampled over my basil but my cilantro is thriving!

Do your animals destroy your chance at having a successful garden?

DIY Wood & Wire Photo Display

DIY Wood & Wire Photo Display

Hey guys! This project has been a long time coming. I have had it in my mind for a over a year, we also had all the materials probably before I even wanted to create this photo display. I love the fact that we can change out these photos as often or as little as we want. Originally, I intended to hang photos of Anthony and I on these but now that Little Love is coming and our baby shower is at the end of the month, I knew this display would be perfect to showcase our ultrasounds especially at the baby shower. Of course, this photo display is even more perfect now because we can interchange photos of Little Love as she grows because lets get real, it'll be all about her.

This project was super easy and didn't take long at all. We used salvaged wood from our fence, photo hanging wire, eye hole screws and a sawtooth hanger as our materials. We had all these on hand already so the project didn't cost us anything but time, well my husbands time as he put it together for me. I could have easily done it but I like to play the damsel in distress (shhh). Anywho, all he did was cut down the salvaged wood to the size we wanted and than he sanded down the entire surfaces and edges. On the back, he nailed down a sawtooth hanger and than he screwed in the eye hole screws on the front side, one on each end and attached the hanging wire to each screw by wrapping it around the eye hole. Easy enough! Than the fun part came in hanging it on the wall in our entryway.

I was also able to get him to finally move our console table inside and played with different displays (its a work in progress). I am in love with this wood and wire display and can't believe we didn't do this sooner. Just imagine all the possibilities: you could display childrens' photos, childrens artwork, Christmas cards and so much more. I hope you gain inspiration to create a photo display to your liking!

No-Sew Scarf to Vest Tutorial

No-Sew Scarf to Vest Tutorial

Before the spring season, I purchased multiple scarfs but now that spring is over and summer is in full swing I wanted to try to incorporate the scarfs I bought into the summer season.

Let's be honest, I live in Texas so wearing something around my neck is like being naked in Alaska. No Bueno.

I decided to look to Pinterest of course and ran across couple of tutorials showing how to turn a scarf into a vest but a lot of them required sewing. The whole purpose I want is to be able to wear my scarfs across all seasons so sewing them into a vest isn't ideal.

So here is the best version of the no-sew scarf to vest conversion:

Stretch scarf out lengthwise

Fold hamburger style (who remembers that from elementary)

Tie the corners you are holding into a small knot, you could get fancy here if you want but I went the simple and easy route

Open scarf

And now you are able to wear your scarf as a vest during summer without overheating.

Now tell me you are not excited to do this to all your scarves? I know I am now that I can get more bang out of my buck.

DIY Branchlers

DIY Branchlers

Last week while reading the blogs I follow, I came across Jenna Sue's 5 days of Holiday DIY's. On Day 1 she showed a tutorial for branchlers and provided free printables. I immediately printed out one of the printables and placed it above my kitchen cabinets in place of the NOEL sign. I also started storming up ideas to create the branchlers.

We Anthony and my brother-in-law, Don, recently trimmed down one of the trees in our front yard so we have had branches in our backyard for a few weeks already. The only thing I had to buy was the plaque which was only a few dollars at Wal-Mart. I did not get to get pictures of the steps because I am a horrible blogger. So I will do my best to walk you through our steps for the most part however you can also refer to Jenna Sue's tutorial which is what we followed for the foundation of the project.

The first thing Don did was remove the the smaller branches off our main pieces to give it more of an antler look. Once he had the shape I liked, he began removing the bark by using a small knife; he also sliced the bottom using a handheld saw to have a flat surface to mount on the plaque. Don finished the branchlers off with sand paper to smooth it out and Polycrylic clear semi-gloss.

As for the plaque, we simply stained the front and back with one coat of dark walnut stain. You do not have to stain the back since no one can see it but I chose to to have a more finished look overall.

After the stain was dry, I attached a sawtooth picture hanger to the back.

Lastly, we attached the branchlers to the plaque with regular nails using a hammer.

I love how the branchlers look in our home and I think it was the perfect touch for Christmastime although I do plan to keep them out year round.

Have you completed any DIY projects for the holidays?
Do you have antlers out for Christmas or all year long?
