Dressing the Bump | Postpartum Style

Dressing the Bump | Postpartum Style

This post was created in partnership with PinkBlush Maternity but all thoughts and opinions are of my own.

The last time I shared a dressing the bump post, I was in the second trimester with Sophia. Since then I have played around with my style as a stay at home mom and then I shared snippets of my outfits and growing bump with baby Anthony. Once I was in the third trimester with baby Anthony, I started to look for inspiration for my postpartum style and one of the styles that kept appealing to me was the peplum top.

I love how it has a flowy drape that could easily disguise your postpartum bump so when I saw this maternity peplum top at PinkBlush, I knew I had to try it out.

Again, what I love about PinkBlush is that their items stretch across your closet no matter what season of life you are in. Even though this top is technically labeled as maternity, my normal size fits me perfectly postpartum. The only con, depending on the importance to you, is that it isn't nursing friendly but I honestly don't mind lifting up my shirt to nurse my little babe so it isn't really a con to me. I guess from breastfeeding for 15-16 months with Sophia and now baby Anthony being my second babe to breastfeed, I feel more confident and don't necessarily need my tops to be nursing friendly. My bras are a different story, haha.

What is your favorite style to wear postpartum?

Fall Transition Fashion Tips

Fall Transition Fashion Tips

This post was created in partnership with PinkBlush Maternity but all thoughts and opinions are of my own.

As many of you my know, I live in Texas and as I mentioned in my Surviving a Summer Pregnancy post, we do not have seasons really. We are stuck in summer year around with a few nice days in between therefore I thought I would share some tips on dressing for Fall without dying of a heat stroke.

Warm Tones

The easiest way is to showcase fall in your wardrobe is to pair warmer tones together such as olive, burgundy, cognac, black, grey, etc. In this look, I pulled together three of these warmer tones: black, olive and cognac.

Lightweight Material

This PinkBlush dress has the perfect amount of thickness to it that it isn't sheer but it isn't too thick that you are sweating crazy especially since I paired it with a utility vest. Again, by wearing a vest instead of a utility jacket, I still get to have a layered fall look but I am keeping my layers lightweight.

Shoes

Wearing the right shoes can determine the look of your outfit and although I am wearing sandals which is traditionally a summer/spring staple, it works with this outfit since they are cognac. At least in my opinion they work; besides I am pregnant and they are what fits so whateves, haha. You could easily pair this outfit with open toe booties to make it more fall "appropriate."

By the way, I am absolutely in love with this maternity dress, I even plan to switch it out as my coming home dress in my hospital bag. It is extremely soft and so flattering and I am loving that it is nursing friendly so it will be transitioning with me postpartum. And because it is a neutral colored dress, it can transition with me to all seasons giving me even more bang for my buck.

Shop this Look:
Dress: c/o Pink Blush (exact - wearing Small)
Utility Vest: Charlotte Russe
Shoes: Old Navy

What are you fall fashion tips if you live in a warmer area?

Tips for Thrifting Children's Clothes

Tips for Thrifting Children's Clothes

Last month when I shared on Instastories (be sure your following me @stormieariel to keep up with our day to day life) my second-hand finds for Sophia's fall capsule wardrobe, I received quite a bit of feedback wanting to know my tips for thrifting as this was the second fall capsule wardrobe I shared of hers using second hand finds (see her 2016 Fall Wardrobe here and her 2017 Fall Wardrobe here).

A little back story first...

For Sophia's first nine months, we were extremely fortunate enough to receive an abundance of clothes that we did not have to buy her anything. For 9-12 months, we were given quite a bit of second-hand items that were still in great condition. This was also around the time I started thrifting for clothes for her which now makes it a year that I have been thrifting for second-hand finds for our constantly growing toddler and new baby to be so here are the things I have learned in the last year about thrifting for children's clothes.

Brands

I personally look for name brand items only such as Carter's (I'm talking Carter's Carter's, not Child of Mine Carter's or Just One You Carter's, more on this in a second), Baby Gap, OshKosh, Children's Place, etc.

Here is why.

When I am thrifting I am trying to save money but I do not see a Baby Gap onesie for $1.50 and a Garnamials onesie for $1.50 to be equal in quality. I am not saying there is anything wrong with Garnamials but I could spend another dollar or two to get it brand new at WalMart so it just is not a good deal to me. This is the same for the different sub-Carter's brand at Target and WalMart. They are cute and I buy them but I would buy those brand new since the pricing isn't that far off. Also to note, there is a difference in quality between the Carter's main brand and sub-brands, hence the different pricing at each store and why they are made specifically for those stores. I have personally found that Carter's main brand can withstand a lot more washes then Just One You and Child of Mine therefore again I wouldn't buy those sub-brands used since the quality has already started to deteriorate depending on how many washes it already went through which gives you less uses of it.

Quality

Since I started talking about quality, let's discuss this next. After sorting through brands, I check the quality of the item. Does it have any stains? Is it faded? Are there holes? Just because something is a brand name doesn't necessarily make it a great buy if there is baby spit up or food stains stuck in the item and there better not be any holes. I guess faded items could be up to your discretion but I personally don't buy faded items no matter how good of a deal it is unless it is handed down to me for free but that is a different story.

Tags

There will be times when you come across items that are name brand AND still have the store tags on them. As in, never have been worn. I typically do not even hesitant and will just grab these items before anyone else sees the goodness I just landed on. Of course, I do make sure the sizing and season is correct for us and if they aren't I think of friends' and family members' whose children's birthdays or baby showers are coming up.

Frequent Shopper

My last piece of advice is the more often you go, the more often you find steals. You don't have to buy something every trip but going often allows you to see the newest stuff they put out and you are more likely to find those items that still have store tags on them. You are also more likely to figure out their sale schedule. The second hand store I frequent has their onesies for 10 for $10 every so often which is a great deal especially when I find all Carter's. Also following your local second-hand store on social media, they may list bigger items (like cribs, strollers, etc.) or their latest sales so you know exactly when to go in if you don't have time to stop by a few times a week.

Do you buy your children's clothes second hand? Are there any tips I left out that works for you?

Infant Wardrobe | What You Really Need

Infant Wardrobe | What You Really Need

After having one baby make it to toddlerhood and only using clothes she was gifted instead of splurging for more clothes, we found the magic number to make a capsule wardrobe work especially since babies are constantly growing the first year. These numbers are suggested for each sizing stage but ultimately it will vary per a child as some babies grow faster during certain stages then others. Also note that clothing before 6 months is typically in better condition since babies are not eating solids yet so those sizes typically stay nicer looking longer which allows you to rotate through them more often.

14 bodysuits/tops

My personal ratio would be around 10 bodysuits and 4 tops but really any combination of the two would work depending on your personal preference. Having 14 suits/tops allows you to be able to maybe make it to two weeks without washing clothes just depending on how much your little babe spits up or how many blow outs he or she may have but this amount will, at the very least, allow you to wash once a week instead of having to wash multiple times in one week.

2 rompers

Rompers can be a great step up outfit than the typical bodysuit which is why I recommend having two in your baby's basic wardrobe. If you have a girl you could easily do 2 dresses instead of 2 rompers or 1 dress and 1 romper. Again, it is about your personal preference and style.

2-3 sleepers

For some reason, I see people recommend having like 7-10 sleepers but we did not find that many necessary at all, even with all the blowouts Sophia would have. We were able to make it fine with each sizing only having 2-3 and still only having to wash once a week. Also, I dressed Sophia everyday after waking up whereas I know some people do leave their baby in the sleeper all day so that could be the difference in why others suggest having so many. Therefore my suggestion would be to start off with 2-3 sleepers and see how your lifestyle goes from there with a new baby and add more to your collection as you see the need.

3-4 pants/shorts

Having a few shorts or pants or even leggings and skirts will help complete the bodysuits and tops and making full outfits for when you are out of the house and you don't need a ton since you can just mix and match them.

1 sweater (season/location specific)

This item will depend on where you live geographically and what season it is. We live in South Texas and it does not get cool until maybe November so only 1 sweater is needed but really even then we could just get a long sleeve bodysuit or shirt and it would work just fine.

1 jacket (season/location specific)

Again, it just depends where you live and what season it is. We don't experience cold weather until January but even then there is no guarantee you will need an actual jacket because a sweater could work just fine. If you live in more colder regions, you may want more than 1 jacket that have difference thickness or even a full snowsuit. So just be mindful of where you live and what the weather is like and adjust your needs accordingly.

1-2 hats

Depending on the season, will determine what type of hat you may need for your baby. Is it summer? Then go with a sun hat to protect their head from being sunburned. Is it winter? Go with a beanie that covers their ears to keep their heads and ears warm. Are they a newborn? Most newborn sleepers come with cute matching newborn hats, just don't let them sleep with the hat as it could become a suffocation hazard if it slips off their head while sleeping.

1 pair of crib shoes

As you will notice, I don't have socks on the list because if you have crib shoes then socks aren't really needed. I recommend getting a neutral pair that can match with everything in the baby's wardrobe. We personally love Freshly Picked moccasins and it helps get baby use to having something on their feet so when they get older, you don't have to fight with them about having shoes on. Funny story is we actually have to fight with Sophia to take her shoes off because she wants to wear them ALL THE TIME. Which is a good problem to have.

Most importantly, just keep in mind of the climate and location and your personal lifestyle and adjust the numbers as needed. And keep in mind this list is for a capsule wardrobe, if you want to add more dresses and rompers or suit and ties then go for it!

Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2017 | Toddler Edition

Fall Capsule Wardrobe 2017 | Toddler Edition

We have gotten some nice fall like weather here in Houston lately which has inspired me to get Sophia's fall wardrobe ready. If you remember from last year, I put together a mini fall capsule wardrobe for her as a baby girl and you may notice a few of those pieces will reappear here in her toddler fall capsule wardrobe. Again, most of the pieces were found at second hand stores with an exception of a few that were given as gifts at her birthday (I made sure to request the next size up from our guests). I did try to find as many exact or similar options for you all in case you want to create a similar look for your toddler girl.

Two Ways to Wear a Striped Dress

Thank you PinkBlush for collaborating with me on this post. As always, all thoughts and opinions are of my own.

Hey guys! I just couldn't wait to share this dress from PinkBlush with you guys as it is extremely soft and comfortable to be in which I think is important for maternity clothes but even more so you want your maternity clothes to be versatile since you are only in them for a short season which is why I am sharing two different ways you can wear this striped dress.

Fall Wardrobe 2016 | Little Love

Fall Wardrobe 2016 | Little Love

When I was planning our trip to New York (UPDATE: Trip Recap here), I had so much fun picking out all of our outfits (to be honest, I started on my outfits months ago haha) but I never realized how much fun it was to play in Sophia's closet as well. When selecting her outfits for our trip, I wanted to make sure she was warm enough as Northerners have real fall compared to us Houstonians. Like it barely turned fall now, like two days ago.

Anyways, once we returned home I was so excited for Sophia to wear the same outfits that she wore in New York down here in the South and I even created more fall looks. The problem is, it has been too hot until now which is why I am barely sharing Fall Outfits towards the end of Fall because Houston doesn't know what seasons are.

A lot of her clothes are great finds from resell shops, Instashops including my own. If I can't find the exact items, I will link similar items for each piece of clothing.

Back to School Looks with Gymboree | Tips & Tricks

Back to School Looks with Gymboree | Tips & Tricks

This post contains affiliate links and I will be compensated if you make a purchase after clicking on my links. I was compensated for this post but as always all story telling and opinions are my own.

As some of ya'll may remember Anthony started school yesterday. Although he is taking distance education courses compared to the traditional face-to-face courses, it made us take a trip down memory lane and remember what it was like starting a new school year.

I remember being so antsy and staying up all night (or only getting a few hours of sleep and waking up super early) wondering what the first day back would be like. I also always created the perfect outfits for the first day because you have to make a great first impression back at school. At the schools I attended, we were limited to uniforms but that doesn't mean I was limited in creating outfits. I used accessories and shoes to help make my outfit look different from everyone else. There was even a night I got dressed and fell asleep in my clothes, I was that excited, haha.

Messy Mama Hair

Messy Mama Hair

I can't be the only one wondering how style bloggers always have perfect hair right? I mean even the mama style bloggers are always looking flawless and I'm over here rocking my Aunt Trunchbull messy bun 24/7. I wish I could say it's because I'm a mama, although that is part of it but mostly because my hair is a frizzy mess with this Houston humidity and if you do catch me on a good hair day, praise the Lord!

Other than the humidity, it is because Sophia grabs my hair and wants to eat it every time it's down or it just gets in my way when I'm trying to do something and it's easier throwing it in a bun but it can give me some major headaches since my hair is so heavy. It's no wonder some mamas cut their hair in cute little bobs but I love my long hair too much to try that again even if it's always in a bun.

Modern Flat Bow | Tutorial

Modern Flat Bow | Tutorial

Hey guys! I know it's been a good while since my last interesting post, haha. I have been doing weekly updates on how I am staying active weekly but I know that can be a bore for some of you so I'm back today with a tutorial but first a little background.

If you follow me on Instagram (@stormieariel) than you know I recently opened my own small shop on Insta (@shopstormieariel). Since Sophia was born, actually before she was born, I loved the way nylon headbands looked. They are so sweet and simple and chic, perfect for a little girl. BUT the price tag on most of them kept me from biting the bullet and even if they were a reasonable price, I couldn't pick just one. So I decided to teach myself how to make bows since I had fabric on hand that was left over from the fabric kites I made for Sophia's nursery plus I also had tons of ribbon on hand from my numerous other projects and from my schoolgirl days.

And I know there are mommas out there like me who are on a budget and need to know how to make simple bows to get them by until they can splurge so I decided to make a video tutorial of how I make one of the bows I sell in my shop. It is the simplest and easiest bow tutorial, so easy a caveman can do it (name that commercial). Also, please let me know how you like the video tutorial in the comments below. I would love the feedback as to which I should start including videos in all my tutorials or if step by step photos preferred or both!

stormieariel style | ed. 3

stormieariel style | ed. 3

Wow guys! It's been way too long..well like a week but felt like longer. Last week I decided to spend all my free time binge watching Jane The Virgin. I'm obsessed. I didn't even get any workouts in so this week there is no update on my progress but I will share my journey of this week next week. Also, I typically post Monday, Wednesday, and Friday but have decided it's best for me to only do twice a week so I will start posting on Tuesday and Thursday now. Enough chit chat, lets get to why you are really here unless you wanna chat I could chat all day so please feel free to leave comments!

As you know, last year, I began taking daily photos of my outfits as I was learning how to mix and match the clothing items I already had, to create new outfits. I was also learning to step out my comfort zone by breaking some old fashion rules that I stuck by (check out that series here) but now those rules are out the window. As I was venturing into my new fashion style I was constantly sharing my outfits on Instagram (#stormiearielstyle).

Once I got pregnant, I continued sharing my daily outfits along with weekly Bumps Dates here on the blog and on Instagram. After sharing my everyday mom style during my first month and a half postpartum, I decided to continue to share my everyday looks in a monthly format here on the blog. I will also continue posting my everyday style on Instagram in real life time so be sure you are following me (@stormieariel).

This month I have been super busy and didn't have much chance to snap my outfit pictures however I was super glad about being able to get myself and Sophia dressed and fed and letting the dogs out AND fixing the bed all before 11:20am. It's the little things guys and I can guarantee that was the only morning that happened.

Fourth of July | Outfit Ideas

Fourth of July | Outfit Ideas

Besides looking for quick and easy craft projects to do, I also think about outfits I want to create for each holiday. However I try to stay away from holiday specific theme clothing like stars or american flags because I want to be able to wear my clothing year around. Instead of focusing on themes, I like to put outfits together around colors that coordinate with each holiday.

Today, I put together two different looks for Fourth of July and I already know which one I'm learning towards!

stormieariel style | ed. 2

Welcome back guys! I am kinda getting caught back up on my blog post schedule and I am excited for the weekend as always! Did this week fly by or what? Probably helped that it was only a 4 day work week for Anthony to seem so. What do you guys have planned for the weekend?

Before we get ready for a birthday party this weekend, it's time for the next roundup of my everyday style. Remember for real time feed follow me on Instagram (@stormieariel) and my outfits are always captioned with #stormiearielstyle and if you can't get enough of my Little Love she has her own hashtag #sophiamanuela

I think this month, I was definitely coming into my own and getting more comfortable with my style again. As some of you may know I was struggling with my style as a nursing momma but just pull up that shirt girl! You don't need fancy nursing tops to feed your child. You can still rock your normal wardrobe, look fashionable and feed the kid. Win, win, win for everyone.

Olive and black and white stripes are a no brainer and are always a go-to match in my book.

What I Wore | May Houston Blogger Meetup

What I Wore | May Houston Blogger Meetup

I was initially planning to do a Memorial Day Inspiration outfit for today but the weather did not cooperate with me last Saturday so since I loved the outfit I wore to the Houston Blogger Union Meetup so much I decided to share the details in it's own post instead of waiting for my next edition of stormieariel style (check out my first roundup here). However, it rained Sunday as well and we were only able to quickly snap these photos on our porch.

About a week before the Houston Blogger Meetup, I started wondering what I should wear as I have seen on Instagram from other blogger events, bloggers typically dress to impress and since I typically stick to my mom uniforms, I will take any excuse to dress up when I can. But what is a girl to do when all her clothes are last season and she is still sporting a baby pouch and doesn't have the money to buy new clothes? Well, I went to my spring pinterest board to see what styles I have been loving and how I could recreate some of those looks by remixing my closet.  I knew I only had two options for pants unless I wore my maternity pants since most of my pants still don't button. It was either my white crop pants or my olive crop pants but knowing my white crops have a small stain I opted for the olive crops. Than came pinterest inspiration:
1 | 2 | 3

I was so worried about looking out of place but this outfit came together so perfectly (similar items linked at the bottom of this post) and now I am trying to figure out where I can wear it next!!

stormieariel style | ed. 1

Hey Guys! Who is glad it's Friday?! I know I am!! Not because we have plans but Anthony is off on the weekends and it's nice having more quality family time with him and Little Love. I love seeing their interaction with each other and he is so amazing in helping with her as much as he can especially after last weekend. I had a horrible crick in my neck that had me in tears.

Anyways...

Last year, I began taking daily photos of my outfits as I was learning how to mix and match the clothing items I already had, to create new outfits. 3 Ways | Mother's Day Dress

3 Ways | Mother's Day Dress

Hey guys! How was y'alls weekend? Ours was so relaxing, we lounged around most of the day Saturday and yesterday we got some chores done around the house as well as photograph this lavender lilac purple dress.

I have had this dress for years and have used it in numerous types of occasions. I  wore it to my graduation, our gender reveal party, etc. and now it's on my radar to wear for my first Mother's Day. I love that this dress has this beautiful sleeve and back detail.

So I thought I would create three different ways I can style it by simply switching out the shoes and adding/removing necklaces.

For my first look I went with the obvious and paired the dress with wedges (perfect for spring and summer) and a statement necklace. I love how a statement necklace alone can transform any outfit.

My second look was toned down a bit by trading the wedges for cute sandals (a more casual but still cute option for spring and summer)  and adding a simple pendant necklace. Although my accessories are a little more simple with this look, doesn't mean my outfit is simple. The detailing on this dress is more than enough and becomes the focus.

My final look takes this dress down a few notches and makes this look more casual but still like I put effort into it. I don't know about y'all but I've been watching this trend and have been skeptical of it but I think I like it. Dresses are so comfy (but don't get too comfortable that you aren't sitting like a lady) and pairing them with tennis is kinda genius.

If only I didn't have to worry about the bending over situation and sitting lady-like and let's not forget nursing my sweet little babe, I'd probably have a lot more dresses in my closet. I was also hoping the v-neck wrap bust area would make nursing possible while wearing but it doesn't so I will still be on the hunt of what to wear but that doesn't stop you from using these outfits as inspiration. I have linked similar versions of the dress below.

Cinco de Mayo Outfit Inspiration + GIVEAWAY

Cinco de Mayo Outfit Inspiration + GIVEAWAY

This post was created in partnership with PinkBlush Maternity but all thoughts and opinions are of my own.

I don't know about ya'll but I love Cinco de Mayo, when I was in school we actually celebrated the day by putting on a dance performance.  I also enjoy having an excuse to eat all the tacos and margaritas I want although this year I'll just enjoy tacos and an excuse to dress up!

So when I got the opportunity to collaborate with Pink Blush, I knew I wanted to choose something that would help me feel festive in a chic and fashionable way while being nursing friendly. Pink Blush offers clothing for all stages in a women's life from maternity to nursing to regular and plus sizes. This Ivory Embroidered Accent Tie Front Blouse isn't from their nursing line but that's what I love about Pink Blush, majority of their pieces are so versatile and can cross over into whatever stage of life you are in.

I love that this blouse has a button front closure, certainly makes nursing easier while out enjoying tacos but those tassels details are darling! Who else is loving the tassel trend?

So now onto the GIVEAWAY! Pink Blush was so nice to extend a $50 gift card to one of you lucky ladies! Enter to win using the widget below.

Disclaimer: Please allow us 24 hours to verify all entries and choose a fair winner. If you have won a PinkBlush giveaway within the last 3 months, you will not be eligible to win, winners must wait 3 months before they are eligible to enter to win again. The winner will be contacted via email and will have 24 hours to respond to the congratulatory email before a new winner is chosen. May the odds ever be in your favor.

Wardrobe Remixing | Nursing Mom Edition Vol. 1

Wardrobe Remixing | Nursing Mom Edition Vol. 1

If you have been sticking around than you know how I talked about trying to find my new mom style in this post and how I'm resisting the urge to shop in this post. Well I am sticking to my guns (who even came up with that phrase? And what does guns have to do with making a decision?).

I decided to continue remixing my current wardrobe and making it work for me with my new role as a nursing momma. I talked about buying nursing camis and button ups to make nursing easier and they certainly do BUT you can still wear regular clothes and nurse your baby just fine!

I wanted something that was simple yet pulled together and this shirt makes it so easy to do just that and by pairing it with a nursing cami underneath I was able to nurse Little Love without showing any belly.

I am still wearing my maternity jeans because this momma still has extra fluff. #noshameinmygame #reallifemom

I hope you were able to gain inspiration and realizing you don't have to purchase a whole new wardrobe after baby even if you are a nursing momma. I would recommend only investing in a few nursing camis and nursing bras (I have two camis, one bra and two night time bras) but other than that use what is in your closet and make it work for you! And don't feel you have to fit into your regular jeans or shirts right away. It's not realistic and it will take time to get your pre-pregnancy body back (don't forget it took 10 months to put it on).

Another tip: If you are really tight on budget like we are, use some of those gift cards from your babyshower to purchase nursing bras or camis. I felt guilty at first but realized it benefits the baby as well so go head girl!

Side Note: Ignore my horrible posing, I might get it one day but for right now forgive me and give me pointers if you have any! It's no secret I am in need of it. And to think I use to want to be America's Next Top Model as a teenager. Psh.
