Breaking Rules Pt. 2 | Mixing It Up

Breaking Rules Pt. 2 | Mixing It Up

The last time we talked fashion, I discussed some of the rules and one of the rules I use to hate breaking but now I want to touch on the rules in general.

When you look at these "rules" they don't really work for every outfit. Sometimes you have to try and see if it works for you because after all not everyone has the same style. We are all unique and what I like may not be what you like or vice versa. Or heck I may like mixing colors one day and the next swearing against it.

Fashion should be about how we feel in what we are in, not dressing to impress.
Side note: obviously certain situations may not apply like interviews, meeting patents, etc . Your not gonna wear your pjs and uncombed hair to meet the parents well maybe no pjs because who am I kidding I never comb my hair in the mornings.

My point is if you like it and it makes you feel great wear it!

For example, another big no no of mine was mixing color. The only way two different colors could be brought out was if one accessory had all the colors in it. But now I am enjoying random pops of color, it makes me feel amazing being able to mix colors in a fashionable way (at least to me).

But there are still days I feel great playing it safe as well.

So whether your playing it safe or mixing it up, you can still look amazing. Just do what makes you feel good.

My Desk Hunting Adventure

My Desk Hunting Adventure

A few summers ago, I took some classes online and I loved the flexibility of it but I hated not having a designated space to work. I would often find myself working at our old dining room table and let me tell you sitting at a metal chair for 5+ hours almost 7 days a week was painful, literally. I had really bad back pain even after the classes ended so when we bought our new house, I knew I had to make an office space somewhere.

Originally, the office space was going to be apart of the guest bedroom but we had my sister living with us at the time so we decided to create a temporary office space in our bedroom.

The last time, we bought an office desk it was very bulky (think old school teacher desk) and it took up an entire room the brief time we had it but this time around I wanted something slim that wouldn't take up very much room.

I started my hunt in Old Katy and walked into every single antique store. There was one desk that I really liked at the first store I entered but it wasn't in the price range I was hoping for so I decided to continue looking and if nothing came up, I would talk to hubby about purchasing that one. Most of the antique stores didn't even carry a desk or anything that can could be used as a desk and if they did carry a desk, the price was way way out of my price range. I consulted Anthony about the first desk and he was on board to purchase it but I didn't feel comfortable spending that amount on a desk that I didn't outright love so I went home empty-handed.

I than began searching all over Craigslist and sure enough, I found it: the perfect desk for the perfect price. The person however lived on the other side of Houston but we agreed to meet in Downtown before traffic started so off we went. We arrived at the meet spot and I called the person and they were not anywhere close to arriving so we decided to go further north to meet up with them and that is how I ended up in the middle of the hood in North Houston without knowing it.

There was an old man popping a wheely on his wheelchair, another dude looking like he just walked out of Fresh Prince, and the same man in the wheelchair got up and walked perfectly fine to get a coin out the middle of the street and returned to his wheelchair popping more wheelies. I have been in the hood before but never in the North so it was all new to me and after living in Katy for 4+ years, you get used to the security to say the least.

It was quite the adventure but I am glad with what I ended up with and it fit the space I hoped for it to go in perfectly.

I mentioned before that this set up would be temporary but I love how it the set up feels in our room so this will be the permanent place for my office space (at least for now).

These pictures were taken way before we hung the curtains so here is a more recent picture that I shared on instagram a few weeks ago.

Guest Bedroom | Game Plan

Guest Bedroom | Game Plan

Two weeks ago I shared the before pictures of our guest bedroom and now I will finally show the game plan for the room.

When I first started pinning pictures for a guest bedroom, I kept going with a Coral and Aqua color palette. While I love that palette, it never felt like me at least for our house but in other houses it looked amazing. I wanted to make it work but I just couldn't so I started from square one.

The first question in my mind was the direction I wanted the room to go. I knew I wanted it to feel luxurious as if you were staying at a fancy smancy hotel but how to get there I was uncertain.

Than I found it. The inspiration.

Yes.

The little mermaid.

I had the picture for years from a trip I made to Disneyland in California as a little girl. I knew immediately I would need to make sure the room wouldn't turn into a childish themey room but a room with sophistication.

Before even scouring Pinterest, I found the perfect curtains:

I was already satisfied with the direction we were going but I needed a little more inspiration so in came Pinterest.

See where I am going with this? Let's hope I can pull this off before summer  winter comes and go.

Where does your inspiration come from to makeover a room? Have you used Disney as your anchor piece for a room before?

Guest Bedroom | The Befores

Guest Bedroom | The Befores

The time has come to finally complete a guest bedroom. At our old house, our guest bedroom served as a storage for boxes I did not want to deal with going through. You know what I am talking about right?

Well, luckily our guest bedroom at the new house was occupied for the first few months and now that it is free again we want to complete it before it becomes a dumping ground  (which honestly it already has a little).

So let's get to the befores because whats a makeover without showing the starting point but first let me start off apologizing about the lighting of the photos. I just got my Nikon Coolpix P530 for Christmas and I am still learning how to adjust the lens.

This is the view if you would be entering the room after coming out of the laundry room and you can already see the random stand in there.

Now you see, I also have my sister's TV stored in here as well as a random stand. Anywho, I am most excited about this view because I have curtains that are on the way and they should be here any day.

Looking towards the closet and the entry of the bedroom. I also have plans to re-model the closet as well but that will be a whole other project at a different time.

And that is a pile of pillows that need to be cleaned but I am ashamed to say that I have been too lazy to deal with them so I stuffed them in here and closed the door. Dumping ground much?

One last look when you enter in the bedroom.
For a better understanding of the layout, I created this thingy mahjig. The random things will be removed and will not be apart of the gameplan. Speaking of gameplan, I have already been working on items for the direction of this room but I will save that for another post.

Do you have a dumping ground? What do you use your spare bedroom for? Does anyone else hate washing pillows?

Breaking Rules Pt. 1 | Outfit Repeater

Breaking Rules Pt. 1 | Outfit Repeater

I'm not a fashion expert by any means, I've just worn what I liked but I always followed the "rules." You know the rules:

•No white after Labor Day
•Do not mix patterns or prints
•Match your shoes with your belt and bag
•Do not repeat an outfit
Blah blah blah

I was very guilty of sticking to them but let's talk about being an outfit repeater offender.

To me an outfit was created by the shirt and pants. I didn't see the accessories as part of the outfit, they were just accessories.  I was so concerned about wearing the same shirt so close together that I would often buy shirts that didn't make a large statement so no one would remember them. However, if I did run across a shirt that I loved but knew it would be remembered I would wait months in between before wearing it again.

But you know what? Who cares if someone remembered you wore the same shirt last week or even two days ago (just remember to wash). I love this striped shirt and I want to get the most out of it. Thanks to Cassie, I have finally began to grasp that mixing and matching accessories and layers can create so many different looks. You don't need a closet full of clothes to create new looks each week, we just have to learn to use what we have.

I wore this outfit two weeks ago.

This outfit is from last week.

I am having so much fun with my closet now that I dumped these so-called "fashion rules" and create looks that I enjoy wearing because they make me feel good.

Are you a rule follower? Or are you are rule breaker?
